Scope and Content Gravestone of James Hog, Monikie Parish Church and Burial Ground, Monikie, Angus This stone features a large winged soul with a crown hovering above its head. This symbolises the spirit of the dead person ascending to Heaven on the Day of Judgement, to claim their Crown of Righteousness. Below this scene is the image of a weaver at work on his loom. This has been carved in great detail to include the frame, reed and rollers. The weaver is shown holding a shuttle in his right hand. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates James Hog, who died in 1778. It is inscribed: 'This stone is/Erected by James/Hog Tennant in E. Loanhead/of Aitkenlake and Isobel/Storier his spouse/in Memory/of their deceased son James Hog who died Aprill 1778'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
