Description Vioew of gravestone with depiction of a groom, 1792.

Date c. 1980

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 789766

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Gravestone of William Anderson and Isobel Marten, Lundie Parish Church, Lundie, Angus This shows the main face of the gravestone with its winged soul (emblem of the spirit ascending to Heaven) in the tympanum (arched upper part) of the stone. The main carved panel features a heraldic shield surmounted by a helmet and mantling (leafy drapery). Within the rope-bordered shield is a stable scene, with a horse and a groom holding a shovel. Below is carved the sock and coulter (vital metal parts) of a plough. The figure in the shield in this example may be a groom, who cared for horses. The inclusion of a sock and coulter indicates the trade of farmer, so perhaps the deceased had connections in both trades. Below the shield is a cat-like mask which sprouts curvy greenery. This may be an adaptation of the traditional 'Green Man' masks often found in medieval architecture. This gravestone commemorates William Anderson, who died in 1792. It is inscribed: 'Erected by William and/James Anderson in memory/of their dutiful and Affec/tionate Father William/Anderson who lived in Sumily/hall and deParted this/life the 10 of March 1766/Aged 51 & Isobel Marten/who died 21st November/1790 aged 61'.
