Description Gravestone to the children of John Watt, 1769, Methven Parish Church.

Date c. 1980

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 789623

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Gravestone of the Watt children, Methven Aisle and Lynedoch Mausoleum, Methven Parish Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This stone features Adam and Eve standing below the apple tree, around which coils a serpent, agent of the Devil, which tempts Eve to take the forbidden fruit. The figures stand on an inscribed panel describing the scene. Scenes illustrating the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and the fall of man symbolise obedience to God, and the hope of resurrection offered by Christ (sometimes called 'the second Adam'. At the top of the stone stands the figure of John Watt, a mason, wearing his apron. This is presumably a self-portrait by the carver of this stone. Masonic emblems and tools, including the sun and moon, and set square and dividers as carved within an oval panel on the right. This gravestone commemorates the young children of John Watt, who died in 1748. It is inscribed: 'All ye people that pass by/on thes ston youl cast your ey/This was the way that sin began/woman she beckoned unto man'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
