Scope and Content Caledonian Stove & Iron Works, Bonnybridge, Falkirk This shows a typical bay in the floor-moulding shop. The moulder is sifting greensand into the moulding box on the floor, on top of the pattern for the finished casting. He will then ram up the sand to consolidate it so that it is firm enough to resist the pressure of the molten metal during pouring. This foundry had the last large floor-moulding shop for flat castings in the Scottish iron founding industry. The firm was in family ownership until 1961, and was by 1971 owned by Midland Industries. The foundry has since closed and been demolished. This foundry was established in the late 19th century to make heating and cooking stoves, a speciality of three firms in the Falkirk and Bonnybridge areas: this one, Lane & Girvan; Smith & Wellstood: and R & A Main. This one still made stoves, as well as catering equipment and switchgear castings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
