Scope and Content Caledonian Stove & Iron Works, Bonnybridge, Falkirk This shows a jolt-squeeze moulding machine in the moulding shop. The moulding box on the table of the machine, sitting on top of a plate pattern, has been filled with greensand and vibrated (jolted) by the machine to ensure that the mould is properly filled. Here it is being squeezed to consolidate the sand. This foundry had the last large floor-moulding shop for flat castings in the Scottish iron founding industry. The firm was in family ownership until 1961, and was by 1971 owned by Midland Industries. The foundry has since closed and been demolished. This foundry was established in the late 19th century to make heating and cooking stoves, a speciality of three firms in the Falkirk and Bonnybridge areas: this one, Lane & Girvan; Smith & Wellstood: and R & A Main. This one still made stoves, as well as catering equipment and switchgear castings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
