Interior View showing men pouring large mould

Description Interior View showing men pouring large mould

Date 30/4/1971

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 787493

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Muirhall Foundry, Muirhall Road, Larbert, Falkirk This shows a large mould being poured from a ladle suspended on an overhead crane. The pouring has almost been completed, as shown by the flame flaring from the riser, to the right of the glare from the ladle. The metal being poured into this mould is spherical graphite (SG) iron, made by adding, in this case, magnesium to molten 'grey' iron. This results in the carbon in the casting being deposited as spheres, rather than as flakes, making the casting much less brittle. This foundry was established in 1920, and was in 1971 owned by Robert Taylor & Co (Iron founders) Ltd. It originally made 'Tayco' boilers, but switched during World War II to making bombs. By 1971 it was specialising in making engineering castings, many in special nickel alloys. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
