Scope and Content Muirhall Foundry, Muirhall Road, Larbert, Falkirk This shows one of the electric induction furnaces in the moulding shop, being tapped into a ladle by tilting the body of the furnace. Magnesium metal has just been added to the iron to make spherical graphite (SG) iron, which makes castings as strong as steel castings. In ordinary grey iron, used for most castings, the graphite exists as flakes forming the boundaries of iron crystals, making the iron relatively brittle. In SG castings the graphite is deposited in spherical nodules in a matrix of iron, making the castings much tougher. This foundry was established in 1920, and was in 1971 owned by Robert Taylor & Co (Iron founders) Ltd. It originally made 'Tayco' boilers, but switched during World War II to making bombs. By 1971 it was specialising in making engineering castings, many in special nickel alloys. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
