Scope and Content Redevelopment of Upper Dens Works, Princes Street, Dundee The Upper Dens Works closed in 1978. In the heyday of the Baxter Brothers there had been many buildings on the site - a mill, a wet spinning mill, a five-shed power-loom factory, two calender presses, three warehouses, two schools and two foundries. In the 1980s many of the buildings on the site were demolished, and some were redeveloped into housing at a cost of £7.5 million. The site won the Royal Town Planning Institute Silver Award in 1987. Although the textile industry played a vital role in the economy of Dundee in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, the only trace now remaining are some of the mills and factories. These have proved to be very adaptable for other uses such as housing, small business units, shops and offices. The founder of the Baxters company, William Baxter (1766-1854), opened his first mill for spinning flax in 1822 in Lower Dens, Dundee. During the 19th century the company added other buildings to the complex, becoming the biggest manufacturers of linen in the world around 1840. They maintained this position for another 50 years. Due to the demise of the textile trade in Dundee many of the buildings were demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
