Scope and Content The Tay Works, No 2 Lochee Road, Dundee, after conversion The redevelopment and conversion of Tay Works was carried out by Charles McGregor, Peiston Ltd, from 1985 onwards. The buildings were converted into student accommodation, shops, and business units. Although the outside appearance of the buildings has been maintained, little is left of the original internal layout. The textile mills have proved to be highly adaptable buildings. Some textile mills in Dundee are now used for the spinning of man-made fibres such as polypropylene, or for the making of crisp packets. D C Thomson, the printer, uses one 1860s weaving shed for the production of annuals, while other former mills are used for furniture manufacture. The Tay Works in Lochee Road, Dundee, began as a business in 1849 when the Gilroy Brothers bought several mills from a bankrupt flax spinner. The works was extended further with the building of other mills and factories between 1851 and 1881. By 1877 Gilroy Sons & Co was the second biggest jute manufacturer in the world. By the 1970s the jute industry had declined, and in 1986 much of the Tay Works was converted into student residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
