Scope and Content Photographic copy of plan and sections showing details of the top floor, North Mill, Tay Works, No 2 Lochee Road, Dundee The North Mill dates to 1863-4, and the central section was built to link two mill buildings. The Gothic roof is supported on cast-iron columns which are seen in the plan and sections here. Six cast-iron roof trusses were used for an area about 23m in length. Architecture such as this would certainly have impressed any visitor to the works. However, it was functional as well as decorative, as the use of cast iron in the structure of the mill helped to make the building fireproof and the high ceilings meant the room was well-lit. The Tay Works in Lochee Road, Dundee, began as a business in 1849 when the Gilroy Brothers bought several mills from a bankrupt flax spinner. The works was extended further with the building of other mills and factories between 1851 and 1881. By 1877 Gilroy Sons & Co was the second biggest jute manufacturer in the world. By the 1970s the jute industry had declined, and in 1986 much of the Tay Works was converted into student residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
