Scope and Content Waverley Iron Works, Huddersfield Street, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This shows the interior of the firm's assembly shop, with a small cross-country vehicle, known as the 'Gnat' being completed. This bay is part of a U-plan range incorporating machine shop and store. The foundry is in a separate building. In the 19th and early 20th century this had been a notable millwrighting firm, designing and building the ironwork and power transmission systems for many of the Borders textile mills, and making sectional cast iron water tanks. They also made equipment for public laundries, the so-called 'steamies'. This works was established before 1744 by the Aimers family, who became noted millwrights, adding iron founding when iron mill parts became fashionable in the late 18th century. In the early 1890s the firm became Aimers, McLean & Co, when McLean, who had worked on the Forth Bridge became a partner. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
