Scope and Content Firhill Iron Works, Panmure Street, Glasgow This shows the foundry from the south-west, with a bridge over the north-western channel linking the outer and inner Firhill Basins of the Forth & Clyde Canal (Glasgow Branch). On the left is the heavy moulding shop, and to the right the light moulding shop, with the modern cupola sticking up above it. Pipe founding was a very important Glasgow industry in the late 19th century, and Glasgow-made water pipes were exported all over the world to equip the water supply systems of expanding cities. This foundry was still in operation in 2003. This works was established in 1846 by James and John Shaw. In 1851 John left, and James's brother Archibald McInnes replaced John in the partnership. By 1971 this was the last representative of the Glasgow pipe-founding industry, making flanged pipes of up to 1.2m in internal diameter. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
