Scope and Content Devonvale Mills, Tillicoultry, Clackmannan This shows what was probably the original wool spinning mill of 1846-51. The flat-roofed gatehouse and the covered loading bay to the left were probably added in the 1930s. The mill has a valley gutter dividing the roof into two, and the attics are lit by roof-lights. The mills were owned in 1971 by Samuel Jones (Devonvale) Ltd, paper converters, who also operated two other mills in the area, the Oak and Middleton mills. Devonvale was used for coating paper. The complex closed in the early 1970s and this block was then demolished. These mills were founded in 1846-51 by J & R Archibald probably originally as a wool spinning mill, though the mills were later an integrated spinning and weaving complex, making tweeds, tartans, shawls and shirtings. They closed between the wars and were converted into a paper-coating factory. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
