Scope and Content East India Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the south-east quay of the harbour, with the Clyde turbine excursion steamers 'Queen Mary II' and 'Duchess of Hamilton' laid up awaiting the start of the cruising season. The dry docks are in the right background. In 1971 the harbour was used exclusively for laying up summer excursion steamers during the winter, and for ship repair by James Lamont & Sons Ltd, who had added a second dry dock parallel to the first. The quay walls were rebuilt in reinforced concrete in the 1990s, and the transit shed demolished. This harbour was built in 1805 to designs by John Rennie. It was constructed with sloping revetted sides and timber-piled quay faces, though the south-east quay was later rebuilt with vertical masonry walls. On the south-west side a dry dock was provided.
