Scope and Content East India Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the harbour from the south-east, with Macbrayne and Caledonian Steam Packet Co vessels laid up or awaiting repair. The ships on the left are the 'Queen Mary II' and the 'Duchess of Hamilton'. In 1971 the harbour was used exclusively for laying up summer excursion steamers during the winter, and for ship repair by James Lamont & Sons Ltd, who had added a second dry dock parallel to the first. The quay walls were rebuilt in reinforced concrete in the 1990s, and the transit shed demolished. This harbour was built in 1805 to designs by John Rennie. It was constructed with sloping revetted sides and timber-piled quay faces, though the south-east quay was later rebuilt with vertical masonry walls. On the south-west side a dry dock was provided.
