Description View from SSE showing the King George V and Lochbroom moored

Date 31/3/1971

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 785663

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content East India Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the inner face of the north-east pier with the steamer 'King George V' and a small coaster berthed alongside. Note the revetted sloping quay wall and the timber-piled face. The transit shed is similar to those on the West Harbour piers, and was probably built in about 1860. In 1971 the harbour was used exclusively for laying up summer excursion steamers during the winter, and for ship repair by James Lamont & Sons Ltd, who had added a second dry dock parallel to the first. The quay walls were rebuilt in reinforced concrete in the 1990s, and the transit shed demolished. This harbour was built in 1805 to designs by John Rennie. It was constructed with sloping revetted sides and timber-piled quay faces, though the south-east quay was later rebuilt with vertical masonry walls. On the south-west side a dry dock was provided.
