Scope and Content South Front, Murthly Hospital, Perth & Kinross, from the west-south-west (closed 1984 and now demolished) This long south-facing front has a large central two-storeyed block, designed in an Italianate style by the architect, David Smart (1824-1914), which was added c.1871. The octagonal timber cupola, topped by a turret, which rises from the roof, served as an observation tower. The lower, two-storeyed ward blocks that stretch out on either side were designed by Edward & Robertson to accommodate male patients on one side and female patients on the other. The ground-floor canted windows take full advantage of the southern aspect, and doors from each ward block gave access to the gardens. The windows of the ward block retain their original horizontal glazing. The building was symmetrical, with the male and female ward blocks on either side of the central block structurally identical. Each ward block contained day rooms, dormitories, infirmaries, single rooms for difficult or noisy and disruptive patients, and bathrooms and toilets. The central administrative block contained all the necessary public rooms, including workrooms, offices for administration, and the matron's and superintendent's apartments, and the recreation and dining halls where the patients met for social events and meals respectively. Murthly Hospital, designed by the Dundee firm of architects, Charles Edward & Thomas S Robertson, opened in 1864 as the Perth District Asylum for pauper lunatics. It was the second district asylum to open in Scotland, and in 1894 became one of the first to build villas within its grounds in an early attempt to provide accommodation for patients based on the colony or village system. The hospital closed in 1984 and is now demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
