Scope and Content South Front, Murthly Hospital, Perth & Kinross, from the south-west (closed 1984 and now demolished) This long south-facing front overlooks neatly maintained lawns within the extensive grounds. The central two-storeyed block, designed in an Italianate style by the architect, David Smart (1824-1914), was added c.1871 and topped by a large octagonal timber cupola that served as an observation tower. The long two-storeyed wings that stretch out on either side were designed by Edward & Robertson to accommodate male patients on one side and female patients on the other. The canted windows on the ground floor and sun porch (left) take full advantage of the southern aspect. The sexes were segregated within the hospital, with male and female patients accommodated in separate wings. The central block virtually cut the whole asylum into two portions, with the male and female sections structurally identical. Each wing contained day rooms, dormitories, infirmaries, single rooms for difficult or noisy and disruptive patients, and bathrooms and toilets. The central block contained the public rooms - workrooms, offices for administration, the matron and superintendent's apartments, and the recreation and dining halls. The whole design was symmetrical and ordered, with a classification system based on sex, class and complaint. Murthly Hospital, designed by the Dundee firm of architects, Charles Edward & Thomas S Robertson, opened in 1864 as the Perth District Asylum for pauper lunatics. It was the second district asylum to open in Scotland, and in 1894 became one of the first to build villas within its grounds in an early attempt to provide accommodation for patients based on the colony or village system. The hospital closed in 1984 and is now demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
