Scope and Content Detail of Stained Glass Window in North Transept, Crichton Memorial Church, Crichton Royal Hospital, Glencaple Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This stained glass window, by the Glass Stainers Company, is in the north transept of the church. The work, possibly by Oscar Paterson, is exceptional, with stylised figures on either side, and black, pale yellows and greens against a clear background which allows views of the trees outside (left). The glass stainer, Oscar Paterson (c.1862-c.1938), was born in Glasgow, and in 1893 entered into partnership with Harry Thompson to form the Glass Stainers Company. Throughout his long career, Paterson was to execute hundreds of church windows, and what set his work apart from that of his contemporaries were his highly unusual colour schemes and his exceptional technical ingenuity. The dominant, and often only, colours in his designs were lemon, yellow, orange, grey, black and opaque or opalescent white. In almost all his designs the drawing is done entirely by the leadlines, with light and shade being suggested by the juxtaposition of appropriate colours. Crichton Memorial Church, designed by the architect, Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930), was built in 1890-7 during a major period of development of the Crichton Royal Hospital (then the Crichton Royal Asylum for Lunatics) site. It stands at the heart of the complex of buildings, and is unquestionably the finest building within the grounds. It was designed to be used by all denominations and all classes of patients, and was built as a memorial to the asylum's founder and to celebrate the institution's 50th anniversary.
