Scope and Content Light and clock-tower, Custom House Quay (Steamboat Quay), Greenock, Inverclyde This shows a combined navigation light, clock and bell on the Steamboat Quay, which was installed in 1868 to replace a more modest one, probably installed in about 1820. The new column was designed by William Clark, a local artist, and made by Rankin & Blackmore in their Eagle Foundry, Greenock. The original light of c.1820 was moved to the then new Esplanade at the west end of Greenock, and is still there. The 1868 light was moved in the 1990s to form the centrepiece of a consolidated and re-landscaped Steamboat Quay. The port of Greenock was, before the deepening of the River Clyde made Glasgow a major port, the greatest trading centre in the west of Scotland. Its custom house was built in 1818, and at about the same time the quay in front of it was laid out to serve the growing steamboat traffic on the Clyde. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
