Scope and Content Greenock Custom House, Custom House Place, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the north side of the building from the north-west. This entrance front faces the Steamboat Quay, rebuilt between 1809 and 1822, and used by the first Clyde steamers. The clock light to the left is a replacement of the original, and was installed in 1868. By 1971 the trade of Greenock was comparatively light, and this building was under-used. It was completely remodelled internally in the 1980s by the Property Services Agency as a modern office to deal with Value Added Tax (VAT), and other customs and excise business. The port of Greenock was, before the deepening of the River Clyde made Glasgow a major port, the greatest trading centre in the west of Scotland. Its custom house was built in 1818, to designs by William Burn, on a scale, and with a grandeur commensurate with the trade of the port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
