Scope and Content Greenock Custom House, Custom House Place, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the west end of the building from the south-west. The monumental Classical style was then considered appropriate for major public buildings. The main entrance faced the Clyde estuary across the Steamboat Quay, a glimpse of which can be seen to the left. By 1971 the trade of Greenock was comparatively light, and this building was under-used. It was completely remodelled internally in the 1980s by the Property Services Agency as a modern office to deal with Value Added Tax (VAT), and other customs and excise business. The port of Greenock was, before the deepening of the River Clyde made Glasgow a major port, the greatest trading centre in the west of Scotland. Its custom house was built in 1818, to designs by William Burn, on a scale, and with a grandeur commensurate with the trade of the port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
