Scope and Content Cornton Foundry, Cornton Road, Bridge of Allan, Stirling This shows the top of the cupola, with its open top. The casing is made of cast-iron segments cast in the firm's old foundry in Stirling. The keeper is shovelling coke into the charging hole on the right-hand side of the shaft. On the right is a pile of cast-iron scrap ready to be charged into the cupola. In 1971 this foundry was still owned by a Mr Davie, who ran it with two employees, who moulded for a fortnight, then poured all the moulds at once. Most of the output was sold to Perth County Council and to Stirling Town Council. The foundry has since closed and been demolished. This foundry was built in 1940-2 by James Davie & Sons, iron founders and engineers, who had a foundry in the centre of Stirling where they made architectural castings and agricultural implements. The new foundry was built to make castings for the war effort. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
