Scope and Content Canal swing bridge, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow Bridge, East Dunbartonshire This shows the bridge from the east. It is of steel plate girder construction, on the original abutments, and was hand-operated. The gearing on this side of the bridge operated locking wedges which had to be withdrawn before the bridge could be swung open for canal traffic. This bridge was closed to canal traffic in 1962, and the operating gear removed. It was demolished in the 1970s, and replaced by an Armco steel culvert. This was in turn replaced by a reinforced concrete beam bridge in about 1993 as part of the Glasgow Canal Project. This was one of a number of swing bridges built in the 1920s on the Forth & Clyde Canal, to replace the standard double-bascule bridges, which were proving inadequate as the weight of road vehicles increased.
