Scope and Content Drawing of fragment of the Apostles' Stone, Dunkeld, Perthshire Surviving records indicate that Dunkeld was an important ecclesiastical centre by the 9th century, although no structural evidence has been found. It is probable that relics of Columba were brought to Dunkeld by Kenneth MacAlpin, king of the Picts. Two decorated stones and a cross-slab which may have come from the site are in the medieval abbey. This cross-slab fragment shows the miracle of the loaves and fishes in the top panel. The worn lowest panel may depict men and animals. The middle two panels depict the twelve Apostles in a repetitive style similar to that of Irish crosses of the 9th and 10th centuries.
