Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the easternmost of the three rail-mounted electric cranes on the quay, from the south-east. This one was built by Morgan of Kilwinning, and had a capacity of three tons. To the left are a clamshell grab, and several of the steel containers used for handling coal shipments. This wharf remained in use until the 1980s, and was improved in the 1990s by Irvine Development Corporation, who repaired the wharf as part of an extensive programme of harbourside improvements, and refurbished this crane. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
