Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, North Ayrshire This shows the east end of the timber quay from the east-south-east, with the puffer 'Sitka', converted to diesel propulsion and the tug 'Garnock'. In the distance on the left is one of the rail-mounted electric cranes. The harbour mouth is out of sight to the left. This wharf remained in use until the 1980s, and was improved in the 1990s by Irvine Development Corporation, who repaired the wharf, and one of the rail-mounted cranes, as part of an extensive programme of harbourside improvements. This river-mouth harbour apparently dates from the late 17th century, when the River Irvine changed its course. It was subsequently improved, most recently in the early 20th century when a timber quay was built, with rail-mounted cranes, possibly by the Ayrshire Dockyard Co, which took over the harbour in 1919.
