Scope and Content Shotts Iron Works, Burnbrae Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire This shows, in the centre, the 19th-century wing which houses the offices and the core stove. To the right are the stoves for drying drysand moulds, with a pile of coal in front. To the rear is the heavy foundry, with its corrugated iron cladding. This foundry was rebuilt to make castings for equipment used in the pits in the area, which it was still doing on a limited scale in 1971. The National Coal Board closed these works in the late 1970s, and this building has been demolished. This works was founded in 1802 by the Shotts Iron Co, and continued to smelt iron until 1947, when the coal industry was nationalised. It had always had a foundry and engineering works, and these were retained by the National Coal Board. They were still operating on a limited scale in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
