Scope and Content Shotts Iron Works, Burnbrae Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire This shows the interior of the brass moulding shop, with finished moulds on the floor. The smaller of the two figures is the brass moulder, the only one left in 1971. Beside him is the moulding tub containing moulding sand, where the moulds are made. This foundry was part of the iron smelting works, and was still doing part of the job it was designed to do, making castings for equipment used in the pits in the area. The National Coal Board closed these works in the late 1970s, and this building has been demolished. This works was founded in 1802 by the Shotts Iron Co, and continued to smelt iron until 1947, when the coal industry was nationalised. It had always had a foundry and engineering works, and these were retained by the National Coal Board. They were still operating on a limited scale in 1971. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
