Scope and Content Caledonian Stove & Iron Works, Bonnybridge, Falkirk This shows the bases of the two old cupolas, which, with their exposed brick open tops, are typical of late 19th-century Scottish foundry practice, though the drop bottoms, seen here, are not typical. The pipes lead blast air into the wind-belts of the cupolas from a blower in the building on the right. This foundry had the last large floor-moulding shop for flat castings in the Scottish iron founding industry. The firm was in family ownership until 1961, and was by 1971 owned by Midland Industries. The foundry has since closed and been demolished. This foundry was established in the late 19th century to make heating and cooking stoves, a speciality of three firms in the Falkirk and Bonnybridge areas: this one, Lane & Girvan; Smith & Wellstood: and R & A Main. This one still made stoves, as well as catering equipment and switchgear castings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
