Scope and Content Lambhill Iron Works, No 30 Strachur Street, Glasgow This shows the works from the west. The large corrugated iron-clad sheds and the size of the gantry supporting the crane which served the yard give an idea of the scale of the works, which, by 1970, was engaged in general structural engineering, in the ownership of the Lambhill Ironworks Ltd. The works was sited here, on the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal, to use the canal for bringing in pig and malleable iron and coal. It was later rail-served. It closed in the 1970s and has been demolished. This works was founded in 1881 by R Laidlaw & Son, gas and water engineers, who had earlier been based at the Barrowfield Works in Bridgeton. Laidlaws were the biggest firm of their kind in Glasgow, and built such large structures as gas holders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
