Scope and Content Woodworking Shops, Lochgorm Railway Works, Longman Road, Inverness, Highland This shows a detached part of the works, which housed the woodworking shops. The Highland Railway built many off its signal boxes, goods sheds, and some passenger stations of standardised timber components, and these were made in this building. Though after the grouping of the railways in Britain in 1923 this works no longer made locomotives or rolling stock, it was kept busy with repair work. Even after dieselisation it was given repair work to do, and now maintains the diesel multiple-unit trains used on the Highland lines. The first railway to reach Inverness, the Inverness & Nairn Railway, opened in 1855, established its workshops to the north of its route, just to the east of the station. This became the nucleus of The Highland Railway's comprehensive building and repair workshops, part of which is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
