Scope and Content Newmill Woollen Mill, Elgin, Moray This shows a cast-iron lintel over the doorway of the boiler house, bearing the date 1868. This lintel was probably cast in the company's own foundry. The boiler house is separated from the spinning mill and weaving factory by a lane, with steam pipes taken across as seen here on the left. This works is still in operation, and is one of the last woollen mills in north-east Scotland. It still produces woollen goods of the highest quality, both of design and of manufacture. The firm's foundry was in 1971 a separate business; its current status is not known. This concern was founded in 1797 by Alexander Johnston, and is still owned by the Johnston family. In 1971 it was an integrated mill, both spinning and weaving high quality woollen goods in a complex of buildings of various dates. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
