Scope and Content Newmill of Elgin Foundry, Moray This shows the exterior of the machine shop, which was built in 1884, and rebuilt in about 1968. To the left of the gable is the end of the steel gantry for the crane serving the stockyard for castings. This workshop was originally a fully integrated part of the adjacent woollen mill. This works specialised in cast iron distillery equipment, such as mash tuns, chargers and receivers. It also made cast iron gearing, and road castings, as seen here, and at an earlier date had made waterwheels. In 1971 it was owned by Newmill Ironworks (of Elgin) Ltd, who had acquired it in 1964. This concern was founded in the early 19th century as an adjunct to the neighbouring woollen mills. It has been rebuilt on a number of occasions, the oldest buildings on the site being the block which incorporates the office, fitting shop, pattern shop and other uses.
