Scope and Content Photographic copy of plan of alterations to entrance, Castle of Mey, Highland This shows a plan of the entrance to the castle drawn by architect William Burn in 1819. His proposed extensions are shown in black, and include a castellated façade with arched doorway. Steps lead up into the entrance lobby, then into the 'Saloon or Inner Lobby' with access to the Drawing room (left), Dining Room (top left) and Parlour (top right). Some of William Burn's additions to the façade were removed during restoration work in the 1950s. The castle is now open to the public and visitors can see the gardens and a memorial bench dedicated to the Queen Mother, who visited the castle every year, and gifted the property to a trust in 1996. The Castle of Mey, built 1566-72, is constructed on a Z-plan and stands three-storeys high, plus attics. The castle was built for the Sinclair family, and remained with them until the 19th century. It was altered many times over its long history, most notably by William Burn (1789-1870) in 1819, who added a new entrance façade. The castle was bought and restored by HM the Queen Mother in 1952.
