Scope and Content Photographic copy of elevation showing alterations to the principal front, Castle of Mey, Highland This shows one of architect William Burn's plans for alterations to the entrance in 1819. The design features castellations, and corbelled turrets to enhance the defensive appearance of the structure. The entrance has an arched stone doorway within a projecting bay, which is reached by a short flight of steps. Careful measurements are marked in ink on the drawing to enable work to be carried out accurately. Some of William Burn's additions to the façade were removed during restoration work in the 1950s. The castle is now open to the public and visitors can see the gardens and a memorial bench dedicated to the Queen Mother, who visited the castle every year, and gifted the property to a trust in 1996. The Castle of Mey, built 1566-72, is constructed on a Z-plan and stands three storeys high, plus attics. The castle was built for the Sinclair family, and remained in their possession until the 19th century. It was altered many times over its long history, most notably by William Burn (1789-1870) in 1819, who added a new entrance façade. The castle was bought and restored by HM the Queen Mother in 1952.
