Scope and Content Photographic copy of a sheet of presentation drawings, War Memorial, The Cross, Paisley This shows a presentation drawing by Sir Robert Lorimer illustrating the war memorial from a variety of angles with prominent buildings in the background. The top image shows the memorial with scale details of the plinth and stonework in the background. The drawings are executed in watercolour and pencil. The sculptor Meredith Williams also worked on Lorimer's Scottish National War Memorial of 1924-7 at Edinburgh Castle. Her work was strongly influenced by the sketches her husband made of fellow soldiers whilst in France during World War I, which give her work great integrity and realism. Paisley War Memorial was erected in 1922 to designs by Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929). The monument is surmounted by an equestrian statue by sculptor Mrs Gertrude Alice Meredith Williams (d.1934) entitled 'The Spirit of the Crusades'. The statue shows infantrymen being led into battle by a medieval knight on horseback, and was designed to symbolise their role as descendants of the crusading tradition.
