Scope and Content Cairnie Junction Station, Aberdeenshire This shows the station from the south, seen from an Aberdeen-Inverness diesel multiple-unit train. The building seen here was probably built in the 1880s or 1890s. Above its roof can be seen the top of the tall signal box which controlled the junction with the Banff branch, and also acted as a block post. This station closed in 1964, when passenger services on the Banff branch ceased. Goods services ended in 1968. This signal box continued in use until the 1980s, when the whole line between Inverness and Aberdeen was re-equipped with radio signalling. These buildings were then demolished. This station was provided by the Great North of Scotland Railway as an interchange station between trains on their main line from Aberdeen to Keith and services on the Banff branch. It was purely an interchange station, with no road access. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
