Scope and Content Huntly Station, Aberdeenshire This shows the station from the south-west, seen from an Aberdeen-Inverness diesel multiple-unit train. The timber-framed overall roof is probably part of the original 1854 station. The main offices are in buildings out of sight to the right. The use of overall roofs was common in Scottish railway terminals until the 1870s, largely so that they could be used as carriage sheds at a time when rolling stock and paint finishes had not produced weather-resistant finishes. This station lost its roof between 1973 and 1985. This station was originally opened in 1854 by the Great North of Scotland Railway as the northern terminus of its line from Aberdeen to Huntly, an important market town. The line was extended to Keith in 1856, as originally intended, so that this may originally have been built as a through station. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
