Scope and Content New Grange Foundry, Links Road, Bo'ness, Falkirk This shows the cupola being tapped into a barrow ladle of 'traditional' type. The keeper, with his protective visor and leather apron and leggings, and steel-tipped boots, is breaking out the fireclay plug which keeps the molten iron in the crucible of the cupola, and the iron is beginning to flow. This foundry is still in operation in 2003, and took over the goodwill of the Dock Foundry when it closed in the 1980s. Ballantynes are now the largest makers of ornamental castings in Scotland. This foundry was established in 1856 as a general foundry, making, among other objects, architectural ironwork. It 1971 it was owned by A Ballantyne & Sons Ltd, and still made architectural ironwork, and also engineering castings, using a range of moulding techniques. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
