Scope and Content Tramway Workshops and Power Station, Shrubhill Tram Depot, Leith Walk, Edinburgh This shows part of the south-west frontage of the complex from the south-west. This block probably housed the steam engines and cable drums, with a boiler house to the rear. The railway was opened in 1868 by the North British Railway, from Abbeyhill to Bonnington, to by-pass Scotland Street Tunnel. This power station was completed in 1898, but the cable system did not open until 1899. Cable operation continued until 1922, when the Edinburgh Corporation Transport Department completed the electrification of the system. This power station then closed. This large complex was built in the late 1890s to house and maintain cable trams run by the Edinburgh & District Tramways Co, and to drive cables powering the northern part of the system. It served as tramway workshops until 1956, when the system closed, and part then became a bus garage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
