Description View from ESE showing men dipping road castings

Date 22/2/1971

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 776194

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Comelybank Foundry, Broad Street, Denny, Falkirk This shows the foundry yard, with a bundle of manhole door castings being lowered into a tank of molten tar. Beside the man on the left are untreated castings of the same type, and on the right are piles of treated lids and casings. This foundry was owned by the Comelybank Foundry Co Ltd. It was making pipes, manholes and a special gear wheel at the time of this visit. The pipes and manholes were dipped in hot tar, as seen here, after fettling, as a precaution against rusting. The iron founding industry was a speciality of the south-east corner of Stirlingshire, with the towns of Larbert, Denny, Falkirk and Bonnybridge all having several firms engaged in this business. This was a small general foundry, built in the late 19th century, which also made aluminium castings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
