Scope and Content Comelybank Foundry, Broad Street, Denny, Falkirk This shows the interior of one of the two moulding shops. The two foundrymen are using a two-man ladle to fill the pipe moulds in the foreground. The fumes are given off by the hot metal heating the moulding sand. This scene is typical of the interior of a foundry during the pouring of moulds. This foundry was owned by the Comelybank Foundry Co Ltd. It was making pipes, manholes and a special gear wheel at the time of this visit. The pipes and manholes were dipped in hot tar after fettling as a precaution against rusting. The iron founding industry was a speciality of the south-east corner of Stirlingshire, with the towns of Larbert, Denny, Falkirk and Bonnybridge all having several firms engaged in this business. This was a small general foundry, built in the late 19th century, which also made aluminium castings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
