Scope and Content Vindanda Laundry, Lenzie Road, Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire This shows one of the bays in the Vindanda Laundry, a medium-sized business of its kind. In the centre are hand-washing tubs, and in the background a range of belt-driven mechanical washing machines. On the extreme right are three dryers (tumble dryers). This photograph was taken on 19 February 1971, the last day of operation of this laundry. Like most of its kind it succumbed to the development of good and cheap domestic washing machines and to the establishment of self-service laundrettes. The development of industrial-scale laundry machinery in the 1880s, and rising living standards, led to the proliferation of 'customer' laundries, which collected household textiles, washed and ironed them, and delivered them either to the houses of the customers or to shops whence they could be collected.
