Scope and Content Caledonia Engineering Works, Macdowall Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire This shows the Macdowall Street frontage of the works from the north-west, with the boiler shops on the left. Behind the frontage on the right were taller machine and erecting shops, and the foundry. The frontage buildings housed lighter shops, making, for example, carpet looms. The firm closed in 1981, by which time it was the last large general engineering works in Paisley. Most of the complex has since been demolished. Two of the machines from the boiler shops, a punching and shearing machine and a plate-planing machine, are in the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine. This works was founded in 1868 by A F Craig, and made a wide range of products, including boilers. It incorporated a large iron foundry. The firm made a large amount of plant for the Scottish shale-oil industry, and then for the petroleum industry, and also made sugar machinery and carpet looms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
