Scope and Content Chancelot Roller Flour Mills, Dalmeny Road, Edinburgh This shows the Dalmeny Road frontage of the mills from the north-east. The showy elaboration of the design was typical of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, which aimed to compete in ostentation with private enterprise. Behind this front block is a range of plainer building, probably a granary. These mills, like the Regent Mills in Glasgow, also owned by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, closed in the 1960s, when retail cooperative societies fell out of fashion. It was demolished in the early 1970s. Had it lasted a few years longer it would probably have been converted into flats. This large and architecturally elaborate complex was built in 1892-4 by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society to supply flour to the retail co-operative societies in the east of Scotland. When completed it produced 3,500 sacks of flour a week. It was a roller mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
