Scope and Content Provan Gas Works, Glasgow This shows the meter houses from the works entrance. These buildings house the station meters, which measure the volume of gas leaving the works. The coal-gas plant was behind these buildings, and the reforming plant is out of sight to the left. After the introduction of natural gas in the 1970s the reforming plant was dismantled, and the works is now just a holder station. There are two very large holders on the southern edge of the complex and a smaller one to the north. This works was built in 1900-4 for Glasgow Corporation Gas Department, and designed by William Foulis, engineer. It was greatly extended after 1919. It was a vertical retort coal-gas works, and operated into the 1960s. It was then converted to make gas by reforming naphtha from oil refineries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
