Scope and Content Blackhill Locks and Incline, Monkland Canal, Glasgow This shows the site of the locks and plane from the west. The route of the plane is marked by the cutting to the left of the buildings on the hill to the right, and the remains of the lock chambers are to the right of the bushes on the left. By the mid 1930s the canal was disused, finally being abandoned in 1950. In the 1960s much of the Monkland canal was filled in and piped, including the above section, with the section from Townhead to Easterhouse being buried beneath the M8 motorway. The locks were not actually "demolished" until the late 60's. This canal carried much of the pig iron made in the Coatbridge area, and also a substantial amount of coal. The inclined plane had a double railway track, with a caisson on each track, and was team-worked. It closed in 1887. The locks were filled in about 1960 and were not actually "demolished" until the late 60's. It was locally known as the 'Gazzoon', a version of caisson. The Blackhill locks were built, as part of the Monkland Canal, in 1793, and a second parallel flight was added in 1841. There were four locks in each flight. In 1850 an inclined plane was built to speed up the operation of the canal, and to economise on water. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
