Scope and Content Clyde Structural Iron Co (Clydeside Ironworks), South Street, Glasgow This shows the steel-framed workshops, probably the originals. These are typical of the class of work the company was formed to build. The offices are out of sight to the right. This part of South Street was laid out after the opening in 1896 of the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway's high-level passenger line parallel to the River Clyde. At the same time a low-level goods tramway was laid along the street, so that sidings could be laid into the various works and yards in the street. This works was built in about 1898 for the Clyde Structural Iron Co, iron roof and bridge builders, later renamed the Clyde Structural Steel Co. The firm was established to take advantage of the growing demand for steel-framed workshops, especially on Clydeside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
