Scope and Content Roxburgh Works, No 24 Harland Street, Glasgow This shows the office block of the works from the north-east. It is built of a dark red terracotta brick, a material much in favour at the time. In 1970 the building was occupied by Giffen of Glasgow, whose business is not known. The building on the extreme left is part of Mechans' works. By 1924 the firm was Macfarlane & Robinson Ltd, enamelware manufacturers. Enamelled kitchenware was popular as people became more conscious of hygiene. It was superseded in the post-World War II period by oven-proof glass stainless steel and plastics. This works was founded in about 1898 by Macfarlane Bros, enamellers. Exactly what this firm did is not clear, but they were probably making enamelled kitchenware, such as washing-up bowls, pudding basins and ladles. They may also have made enamelled dials for instruments made by Mechans. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
